The history of the department

The history of training teachers of language and literature, as well as the development of educational programs in the field of philology, dates back to 1932 – the year of the establishment of the Ural Pedagogical Institute.

One of the first heads of the Department of Kazakh Philology was an outstanding representative of Kazakh literary studies, the first Doctor of Sciences in the republic, Academician Kazhym Zhumaliev. The department has produced well-known writers and journalists who are currently active in various sectors across the country.

Today, the faculty of the department respectfully preserves the memory of distinguished scholars and educators, including S. Akmurzyn, A. Koshimbayev, Kh. Suinshaliev, M. Atymov, N. Bisengaliyev, A. Narymbetov, O. Tolegenov, B. Abilkassimov, G. Abukhanov, M. Tileuzhanov, K. Myrzagaliyev, M. Zh. Zholdykairova, S. G. Sharabasov, O. Burkitov, and others.

Educators who devoted their lives to the upbringing of the younger generation and made significant contributions to Kazakh philological science – R. K. Mukhambetkaliyeva, U. E. Erzhanova, and A. A. Niyazgaliyeva – are currently enjoying their well-deserved retirement, benefiting from the results of their many years of dedicated work.

Over nearly a century of its history, the department has trained thousands of graduates who are now contributing to society across the country. Among the distinguished alumni of the “Kazakh Language and Literature” program are writers and poets such as Zh. Nabiullin, A. Narikov, R. Otarbayev, G. Seitak, A. Shakhin, and M. Shuynshaliyeva, as well as aitys poets including Sh. Kydyrniyazova, M. Kusymbayev, D. Mushtanova, Zh. Boltanova, N. Karimova, Zh. Musina, and T. Myky. At present, the department hosts the Akushtap Baktygereeva School of Poetry and a dedicated poets’ studio.

The primary objective of the department is to train highly qualified specialists who ensure the sustainable development of higher philological education at the university, and to implement educational, methodological, research, and воспитательная (educational and developmental) activities through the integration of science, education, and practice.

The mission of the educational program is to prepare competitive specialists capable of fostering moral, ethical, and patriotic values, in accordance with national and international standards, as well as to promote the development of a scientific-intellectual and information-cultural environment.
